Three times a year Mercury appears to walk backwards through the zodiac, and three times a year the internet advises you to cancel your life. Do not sign anything. Do not buy a phone. Do not speak to anyone.
This is unhelpful, and it is also not what the tradition says. Here is a more practical version.
What is actually happening
Nothing reverses. Mercury orbits the Sun faster than Earth does, and roughly three times a year it overtakes us on the inside. For about three weeks it appears from here to move backwards against the fixed stars — the same illusion as a train you are overtaking seeming to slide away.
Astrologically, Mercury governs the ordinary machinery of daily life: speech, writing, contracts, calculation, short journeys, messages, commerce, and the physical devices that carry all of it. The tradition holds that while its motion is apparently reversed, those functions run less cleanly. Not catastrophically — less cleanly.
Mercury retrograde in 2026
Three windows this year, in IST:
- 26 February – 21 March 2026 (22 days)
- 29 June – 24 July 2026 (24 days)
- 24 October – 13 November 2026 (20 days)
Roughly three weeks each, so about 9 weeks of the year — one day in six. Any advice that would have you suspend normal life for a sixth of your life is advice you should discard on arithmetic alone.
What genuinely deserves rescheduling
The common thread is irreversibility combined with detail. Things where a small missed clause has a large delayed cost:
- Signing long contracts you have not read closely — property, loans, employment. The traditional caution is not that the paper is cursed; it is that this is a period when people skim.
- Major electronics and vehicle purchases, particularly ones where the warranty terms matter.
- Launching something that depends on a message landing correctly — a campaign, an announcement, a product name.
- Difficult conversations you have been putting off, if they can wait three weeks. If they cannot, have them — and over-explain rather than under-explain.
Even here the practical remedy is boring: read the document twice, confirm arrangements in writing, back up your data, leave earlier for the airport, and re-read the message before sending it.
What does not need rescheduling
Almost everything else. Weddings held during Mercury retrograde do not fail — and in Vedic practice, muhurat for a marriage is chosen on entirely different criteria, in which Mercury's direction is a minor consideration at most. Businesses started during it do not collapse. Job offers accepted during it are fine.
Two more sensible notes. First, ordinary continuing work is unaffected — you are not required to stop building, writing or shipping for three weeks. Second, retrograde periods are traditionally considered favourable for anything with the prefix “re-”: reviewing, revising, reconnecting, renegotiating, finishing the thing you abandoned in March. This is genuinely part of the tradition rather than a consolation prize.
The shadow periods
Worth knowing, because it explains a common complaint. Mercury slows to a near-stop before turning, and again before resuming direct motion. These stationary periods — a few days either side — are widely reported as messier than the retrograde itself, precisely because nothing is obviously wrong and everything is faintly stuck.
The two or three days around each date above are, in practice, the part to keep light.
Whether it touches you at all
Here is the piece the general advice cannot give you. A transit only matters to the extent that it lands on something live in your chart. Mercury retrograding through a quiet corner of your chart is a news story about someone else. Mercury retrograding over your Lagna lord, or through the house it rules, or across a planet whose dasha you are running, is a period you will feel.
So the useful question is not “is Mercury retrograde?” — it is “where is it happening in my chart?”
