Ask for a muhurat to start a business and you will often get a date and nothing else. No reasoning, no alternatives, no explanation of why that Tuesday and not the next one.
A real muhurat is a selection process with visible criteria. Here is what actually goes into one, so you can tell a considered answer from a guessed one.
What a muhurat is
Muhurta is the branch of Vedic astrology dealing with election — deliberately choosing a moment to begin something, so that the beginning carries favourable conditions. The logic is the same as a birth chart: a venture launched at a given moment is held to carry that moment's chart for its lifetime.
Which means a muhurat is not a general “good day.” It is a good day for this act, for this person. A date excellent for a wedding can be poor for signing a lease.
The five layers that get checked
1. The panchang itself. The five limbs of the day — tithi, vara (weekday), nakshatra, yoga and karana. For commercial beginnings the traditional preferences run to the fixed and the growing: waxing fortnight over waning, and the “fixed” nakshatras for anything meant to endure. Certain tithis are avoided outright for new ventures — notably the fourth, eighth, ninth, fourteenth and Amavasya.
2. The weekday. Each day carries its graha, and it should suit the work. Thursday (Jupiter) is favoured for anything to do with expansion, teaching, finance or advice. Wednesday (Mercury) suits trade, communication, accounting, anything transactional. Friday (Venus) suits luxury, beauty and hospitality. Tuesday (Mars) is generally avoided for openings unless the business is genuinely Mars-natured — engineering, surgery, security, sport.
3. The inauspicious windows within the day. This is where most casual advice stops short. Even on a well-chosen day there are periods to avoid: Rahu Kaal (about ninety minutes, shifting by weekday), Yamaganda and Gulika. Conversely Abhijit muhurta — the roughly 48-minute window straddling local noon — is considered broadly auspicious for beginnings and is the standard fallback when nothing better is available.
Note that these are local. They depend on your sunrise and sunset, so a muhurat computed for Delhi is not exactly right for Chennai.
4. Your own chart. This is the layer that separates a real muhurat from a calendar lookup. The chosen moment is checked against the founder's chart — particularly the Moon's position relative to your birth Moon, and whether you are running a dasha that supports new undertakings. A textbook-perfect day during a hostile dasha is not a good day for you.
5. What is happening in the sky generally. Eclipse periods are avoided. So is the combustion of a planet central to the venture. Mercury retrograde is a minor consideration for a launch — genuinely minor, despite its internet reputation — but it is one reason to read contracts twice.
What to actually time
A practical question people rarely ask: which moment is the launch?
The tradition times the first real act, not the paperwork. For a shop, that is the opening of the doors and the first sale. For a company, the first transaction or the first client meeting rather than the registration date, which is usually decided by a government office anyway. For an online business, going live.
This is liberating in practice. You rarely control your incorporation date, but you almost always control when you take your first rupee.
What matters more than the date
An honest note, because this is a page on an astrology site and you should be able to trust it.
A muhurat is a tailwind, not an engine. No election chart rescues an undercapitalised business, a product nobody wants, or a partnership between people who do not trust each other. The tradition itself is clear that muhurta supports effort rather than replacing it — which is why the classical texts spend as much time on the preparation of the person as on the position of the planets.
Where it genuinely helps is smaller and real: it gets the founder to choose deliberately rather than drift, to begin with attention, and to start on a day they will remember.
