Sade Sati: What Actually Happens in Each of the Three Phases

Sade Sati has a worse reputation than it deserves. Seven and a half years of Saturn is genuinely demanding, but it is not seven and a half years of the same thing happening over and over. It is three phases of roughly two and a half years each, and they ask for completely different responses.

Knowing which phase you are actually in is most of the value.

First: the phase measured from the Moon, not the Sun

Sade Sati is calculated from your Moon sign — your janma rashi — not your Sun sign. This matters more than any other detail on this page. If you read a “Sade Sati by sun sign” article, you read something meaningless. The Moon in Vedic astrology carries the mind, the emotional body, the sense of safety. Saturn's whole method is to press on exactly that.

Sade Sati runs while Saturn transits three consecutive signs: the one before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the one after. Saturn takes about two and a half years per sign. Three signs, about seven and a half years. That is where the name comes from — sade sati, “seven and a half.”

Phase one — Saturn in the 12th from your Moon

The twelfth house governs loss, expenditure, sleep, isolation, foreign places and everything that happens behind the scenes. This is the phase of subtraction.

Things leave. Some of them you chose, most you did not: jobs, cities, friendships that had been coasting for years, routines that no longer fit. Sleep is often the first casualty — people frequently date the start of their Sade Sati to a stretch of bad sleep rather than to any external event. Expenses appear from nowhere.

What it is asking for is a willingness to let things end without fighting every one of them. The people who suffer most in phase one are the ones who spend it trying to hold a structure together that has already stopped working.

Phase two — Saturn directly over your Moon

This is the heaviest stretch and there is no point pretending otherwise. Saturn sits on your Moon: on the mind itself, on your sense of who you are and whether you are safe.

It shows up as weight rather than drama. Motivation thins out. Things that were easy take effort. People report feeling older than they are, distant from their own enthusiasm, unusually aware of time passing. Relationships get tested not by explosions but by the slow question of whether they are actually load-bearing.

It is also, reliably, the most transformative phase of the three. Saturn is not punishing you; it is checking what you have built on. Anything constructed on borrowed confidence, other people's approval, or an image you were maintaining tends to come apart here. What is genuinely yours does not.

The practical advice for phase two is dull and it works: keep your routines, keep your body moving, lower your expectations of speed, and do not make permanent decisions about your life during your worst week.

Phase three — Saturn in the 2nd from your Moon

The second house rules money, accumulated resources, family and speech. This phase is about rebuilding, and it has a different texture from the first two.

Finances come under scrutiny — sometimes strained, often just forcibly organised. Family obligations become concrete. Speech matters more than usual: this is the phase where a carelessly worded sentence does lasting damage, and where saying the difficult true thing clearly earns you years of goodwill.

People often report that phase three is where the previous five years start to make sense. The subtraction had a point; what is being rebuilt is smaller, sturdier and actually yours.

What Sade Sati is not

It is not a prediction of disaster. Everyone alive gets it two or three times — it is a transit, not a punishment, and it arrives for the fortunate and unfortunate alike. Plenty of people build their careers during one.

It is also not the only thing happening in your chart. Saturn's transit lands on a specific set of houses in your chart, alongside whatever else is running. Two people in phase two of Sade Sati can have very different years.

Find your dates

Because it depends on your Moon sign, your Sade Sati dates are specific to you. We have worked out the phase dates for all twelve Moon signs — see the Sade Sati and transit pages to find yours.

If you want the version that reads the transit against your own chart rather than your Moon sign alone, the Year Ahead Report maps what is actually landing, month by month.
