Somewhere around 28, a lot of people's lives come apart and reassemble. Careers get abandoned, long relationships end, cities change. Search for an explanation and you will be offered two: your Saturn return, or Sade Sati.
They are not the same thing. They come from different systems, are measured from different points, and run on different schedules — and it is entirely possible to be in one, both, or neither.
Saturn return: measured from Saturn
Saturn takes about 29.5 years to orbit the Sun. Your Saturn return is when transiting Saturn comes back to the exact position it occupied when you were born.
So the timing is nearly universal: the first return arrives at roughly 28 to 30, the second around 57 to 60, a third near 87 if you are fortunate. It does not depend on your chart beyond the return itself — everyone gets one at about the same age. This is why the “late twenties crisis” is such a recognisable cultural phenomenon.
The concept is chiefly a Western astrology framing. What it describes is an audit: the structures you assembled in your twenties are tested for whether they can hold a real adult life. Things built to satisfy other people's expectations tend not to survive it. Things that are genuinely yours get more solid.
Sade Sati: measured from your Moon
Sade Sati is the Vedic framing, and it is measured from an entirely different point — your Moon sign, your janma rashi.
It runs while Saturn transits three consecutive signs: the one before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the one after. About two and a half years per sign, so roughly seven and a half years in total.
Because it depends on where your Moon is, the timing is personal. Two people the same age can be in completely different places: one in the heaviest middle phase, the other with a decade to wait. Everyone gets it two or three times in a life, at ages that are specific to them.
Telling them apart
A rough diagnostic:
- Are you 28-30, 57-60, or 86-89? That is your Saturn return, whatever else is going on.
- Is Saturn currently in the sign before, on, or after your Moon sign? That is Sade Sati, at any age.
- They can coincide, and when they do the period is genuinely heavy. They can also occur years apart.
The textures differ too. A Saturn return tends to be structural — the career, the marriage, the city, the visible architecture of a life. Sade Sati, because it presses on the Moon, tends to be internal — mood, sleep, sense of safety, the feeling of carrying weight. Circumstances may look fine from outside while it is happening.
Why Saturn does this
Worth understanding, because it changes how you handle it. Saturn is not a malefic in the sense of wishing you harm. It is the graha of time, limit, structure and consequence — the slowest of the classical seven, and the one that tests whether a thing was built properly.
Saturn transits do not usually destroy solid things. They remove things that were being held together by effort, image or hope. Which is why the same period reads as devastating to one person and as clarifying to another, depending largely on how much of their life was load-bearing.
What actually helps
The advice is unglamorous, which is appropriate:
- Keep routines. Saturn responds to consistency more than to intensity. The people who come through these periods well are usually the ones who kept sleeping, eating and turning up.
- Do not force speed. Saturn periods reward patient work and punish shortcuts more visibly than usual.
- Finish things. Unfinished obligations get heavier under Saturn, not lighter.
- Take the reduction seriously. If something is ending, the useful question is whether you were maintaining it out of habit.
- Do not make permanent decisions in your worst week. These transits run for years; no single fortnight needs to be decisive.
Traditional remedies centre on Saturn's own significations: Saturday observances, service to workers and the elderly, and physical discipline. Note that blue sapphire — Saturn's stone — is the one gemstone that should not be worn on the basis of a difficult transit alone.
Find your dates
Your Saturn return is arithmetic: your birth year plus about 29.5. Sade Sati needs your Moon sign — our transit pages give the phase dates for all twelve Moon signs.
For what the transit lands on in your own chart, month by month, the Year Ahead Report maps the year onto your houses rather than onto everyone's at once.
