What Ekadashi is
The eleventh lunar day of each fortnight. It comes twice a month: once in the waxing half and once in the waning half, roughly twenty-four times a year.
How it is observed
Most keep a partial or full fast from sunrise to the next morning, breaking it during the parana window on Dwadashi. Grains are traditionally avoided.
Why the count varies
A lunar month can carry an Ekadashi that begins and ends between two sunrises, and an adhika masa adds two more. So a year holds twenty-three to twenty-six of them, not always twenty-four.
Choosing the right day
Where a tithi spans two sunrises, smarta and vaishnava traditions can break the fast on different days. If your family keeps a particular reckoning, follow it.
The parana
Breaking the fast has its own window on the following day. Check the panchang for that morning.
