Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj)
Jupiter's Gemstone: Who Should Wear It and How
Pukhraj is the most prescribed gemstone in India, and that is the first thing worth knowing about it. Brihaspati — teacher of the gods, karaka of wisdom, wealth, children, husbands and dharma — has a benevolent reputation that makes yellow sapphire feel like a stone that cannot hurt anyone. In a chart where Jupiter rules the sixth or the eighth, it is not.
- Classically prescribed for Sagittarius, Pisces, Cancer, Leo, Aries and Scorpio lagnas
- Traditionally worn for wisdom, teachers and mentors, expansion, marriage prospects for women, and children
- Jupiter exalts in Cancer, which makes pukhraj particularly effective for Cancer lagna
- Should be avoided by Taurus, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius lagnas
- Caution: routinely sold by default to anyone who walks in — a default prescription is not a prescription
- Expansion is Jupiter's nature, and it expands the unwelcome as readily as the welcome
What This Stone Does
Jupiter is the great expander and the graha of grace — the sense that a door opened at the right moment and someone was standing on the other side to help. When Brihaspati is strong, life has margin. When it is weak or afflicted, the classical symptoms are a persistent lack of guidance, decisions taken without a wise counsel to check them against, difficulty around children, and delays in marriage that no one can quite explain. Yellow sapphire is worn to restore that margin. It is associated with mentors appearing, opportunities widening, and a steadier moral compass, and it carries a long tradition of being given to unmarried women whose seventh house or Jupiter is under strain.
Who Should Wear It
Sagittarius and Pisces lagnas wear pukhraj as lagna lord, and for Pisces Jupiter also rules the tenth, which makes it doubly relevant. Cancer lagna is the standout: Jupiter rules the ninth and exalts in the sign of the ascendant itself. Leo lagna benefits with Jupiter as fifth lord, Aries as ninth lord, and Scorpio as second and fifth lord from a friendly Mars ascendant. The stone earns its place when Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn, combust, retrograde and disheartened in a difficult house, or under Saturn or Rahu drishti. Guru mahadasha, a stalled marriage prospect with an afflicted Jupiter, and difficulties with children in a chart where Jupiter is a functional benefic are all classical windows.
Who Should Avoid It
Taurus lagna should avoid pukhraj, with Jupiter ruling the eighth and eleventh; so should Libra, where it owns the third and sixth, and Capricorn, where it owns the third and twelfth and sits debilitated in the ascendant sign. Virgo lagna is generally advised against on account of Jupiter's kendra and maraka lordship, and Aquarius lagna is usually excluded too. Gemini lagna needs a real reading rather than a rule. The honest caution is different from the other stones: pukhraj rarely produces a dramatic bad reaction, so a wrongly worn one just quietly does nothing useful for years while you credit it for whatever went right. Where it does misfire, the reported pattern is weight gain, sluggishness, complacency and a strange over-optimism that leads to loose commitments. Jupiter expands what it touches, and in the wrong house that is a problem, not a blessing.
How to Wear It
Yellow sapphire is set in gold, Jupiter's metal, on the index finger of the working hand — the finger tradition assigns to Guru. Weights run from five to nine ratti, with five ratti the common starting point for adults; corundum is dense, so a five-ratti pukhraj is roughly 4.5 carats and sits substantially on the hand. Cleanse it in raw milk, honey or Gangajal, and wear it on a Thursday morning in shukla paksha, ideally in the Jupiter hora, after a bath and before eating, chanting Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah one hundred and eight times. Yellow sapphire is hard and durable and needs little care. Allow it thirty to forty days before drawing conclusions, and have an astrologer set the weight — not the shop.
Choosing a Real Stone
Sri Lankan Ceylon stones are the practical benchmark for pukhraj — clean, transparent, and available in a real range of prices. Heat treatment is standard and generally accepted, but beryllium diffusion, which manufactures colour into the surface layer of a cheap stone, is a red flag and must be disclosed on the certificate. The most common substitution in Indian markets is citrine sold as pukhraj: citrine is quartz, costs a fraction, and is a legitimate substitute stone if you buy it knowingly and a fraud if you do not. Synthetic corundum and yellow glass fill out the rest of the fake trade. Look for even lemon-to-golden colour, real transparency, and no milky zones or cracks. Insist on a certificate stating natural yellow sapphire and the exact treatment, and apply the price test: a natural unheated Ceylon pukhraj at five ratti simply cannot cost a few thousand rupees, no matter what the shop says about a family connection to the mines.
✦ Pukhraj is a genuinely fine stone with a genuinely inflated reputation — it is right for perhaps half the lagnas and sold to nearly all of them. Ask which house your Jupiter rules before anyone quotes you a price.
This is the general reading. Your birth chart tells you which of it applies to you.
