Shukra Mantra

Shukra is the graha of everything worth coming home to — love, beauty, comfort, music, the meal that took four hours. His mantras are the sweetest-sounding of the nine and are traditionally chanted at dawn on Friday, before the day has had a chance to get ugly. The tradition does not ask Venus for more pleasure; it asks him for the taste to know which pleasures are worth having.

What This Graha Governs

Shukra is rasa — juice, taste, the thing that makes a life pleasant rather than merely functional. He carries the spouse, the arts, vehicles, jewellery, luxury, the reproductive system, and the whole faculty of appreciation. He rules Taurus and Libra, is exalted in Pisces where love is allowed to be infinite, and weakest in Virgo, where it gets audited. Shukra is also the guru of the asuras, the teacher of the other side, and this is not a footnote — the graha of pleasure is deliberately given to the party that wants things, and Jyotisha never pretends the two are unrelated. A strong Venus makes a life beautiful. It does not, on its own, make it wise.

The Beej Mantra

Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah. Dra is the seed, and the d-r has a roll to it the other clusters lack — this is the beej mantra people find easiest to say and hardest to stop saying. The three vowel turns move it through arising, holding and dissolving; Sah seals the offering; Shukraya Namah is salutations to Shukra, whose name itself means bright, white, clear. Chant it clean, without ornament. The irony of a Venus mantra is that it is the one most likely to be turned into a performance, and a performed mantra is an audience, not a practice.

The Vedic Mantra

The longer form is the Shukra Gayatri: Om Ashwadhwajaya Vidmahe Dhanurhastaya Dhimahi Tanno Shukrah Prachodayat — we contemplate the one whose banner bears the horse, we meditate on him whose hand holds the bow, may Shukra set our thought in motion. The horse and the bow are worth pausing over: this is not a soft portrait of Venus, and the tradition is quietly noting that desire is a vehicle and a weapon before it is ever a comfort. In formal navagraha homa a Rig Vedic verse is recited for Shukra rather than the Gayatri, and there is real variation between lineages about which one — enough that any single confident answer should be treated with suspicion.

How and When to Chant

Friday, early morning, facing south-east. Bathe and put on something clean and light-coloured — Shukra is the one graha where the tradition's fussiness about the setting is instruction rather than superstition, because Venus is trained by what you find beautiful. Use a sphatik or lotus-seed mala. Sixteen thousand is the anushthana, generally spread over forty days or a run of Fridays. Offer white flowers, misri, curd and something fragrant. Many lineages ask that Venus japa be done before eating, on the reasoning that Shukra should be addressed by an appetite rather than by a full stomach.

Who Needs It Most

The indications are Venus in Virgo, Venus combust, Venus with Shani or Ketu, and a seventh house under pressure. A Shukra mahadasha runs twenty years, so it is the one dasha where establishing a practice early genuinely pays for itself. Astrologers prescribe it for delayed marriage, for marriages gone quiet rather than gone wrong, for artists who have stopped making things, and for complaints of the reproductive and urinary systems. One caution belongs here more than anywhere else in this set: no mantra obliges another person to love you, and anyone selling Venus japa on that basis is selling something other than Venus japa.
