Dussehra 2026 Shubh Muhurat

In 2026, Dussehra (Vijayadashami) falls on 20 October 2026 (Tuesday). The puja muhurat runs from 1:14 PM to 3:30 PM. This date is computed from the actual angle between the Moon and the Sun for New Delhi, not copied from a list.

Why two dates are circulating for Dussehra (Vijayadashami)

Neither date is wrong - they come from two different rules. A plain almanac asks which tithi is running at sunrise, and that rule gives 21 October 2026 (Wednesday). But this festival's rite belongs to Aparahna (afternoon), and Shukla Dashami covers that window on 20 October 2026 (Tuesday). So the observance is 20 October 2026 (Tuesday). Aparahna (afternoon) is the fourth fifth of the day, counted from sunrise to sunset.

Check it yourself

Shukla Dashami begins at 20 Oct 2026, 12:51 PM and ends at 21 Oct 2026, 2:13 PM, all times IST. Those two instants are what you can check against your own panchang - the date follows from them.

Why the date moves each year

A Hindu festival is fixed to a tithi in a lunar month, not to a calendar date. The lunar year is about eleven days shorter than the solar one, so festivals drift earlier until an extra month - adhika masa - is inserted roughly every third year and they jump back.

Regional variation

This festival's rule is convention as well as astronomy, and the date can differ by a day between regions and traditions. The tithi start and end instants above are the part to check against your own local panchang.
