Bharani is the narrow gate that everything must pass through, in both directions. Ruled by Venus and presided over by Yama, it is the only nakshatra that holds birth and death in one hand and refuses to pretend they are different doors. There is nothing gentle about creation here, and Bharani knows it better than anyone.

The Symbol and Its Story

Yama is not the villain the word 'death' suggests; he is the first mortal to make the crossing, and therefore the one who knows the way. He rules restraint, limits, and the keeping of accounts, and the name Bharani itself means 'she who bears' or 'she who carries'. The yoni as symbol is deliberately unsentimental: the gate of birth is also a place of pain, blood and irreversible thresholds. Venus rules this asterism, which is the whole paradox in one line, since desire is what walks us to the gate in the first place.

Bharani natives have a capacity to bear things that startles people who mistook their warmth for softness.
