Shatabhisha Nakshatra

Shatabhisha means 'a hundred healers' or 'a hundred medicines', and its symbol is an empty circle. Varuna presides, the ancient god who watches from the water and binds those who break the law with a noose nobody sees coming. This is the nakshatra of the secret cure, the veiled truth, and the physician who works alone.

The Symbol and Its Story

Varuna is among the oldest gods in the Veda, keeper of rita, the cosmic order, and he watches everything from the waters with a thousand eyes and binds the guilty with his noose. He is also, significantly, the god you pray to when illness is a punishment, which is why his nakshatra is the one of a hundred healers. The symbol is an empty circle, which is the strangest emblem in the sky and the most exact: a boundary containing nothing visible, the veil, the enclosure, the secret. Rahu rules it, and Rahu is the eclipse, the shadow that reveals what light was hiding.

Personality and Nature

Shatabhisha natives are private, penetrating, unconventional and quite comfortable being the only person who thinks something. They see through pretence effortlessly and have an instinct for the hidden mechanism, the real reason, the thing under the thing. Medicine and research, especially the difficult and unfashionable corners, psychology, astrology and the occult, technology and data, aviation and space, electricity, alcohol and pharmacology, and any investigative or diagnostic work suit Shatabhisha. Rahu-ruled, it does its best work in fields that did not exist twenty years ago. Money is uneven and rarely the point, since this nakshatra will take the interesting problem over the paid one every time. Its career strength is diagnosis, and it should be paid for the diagnosis rather than the hours.

Love and Marriage

Love is difficult ground. Shatabhisha is genuinely reserved, marries late or not at all, and gives affection in a way that a demonstrative partner may miss entirely. Remedies include Varuna worship, offering water, Rudrabhishek, Saturday charity, and service to the sick, particularly those nobody else will treat.
