Shravana Nakshatra

Shravana means 'hearing', and it is the only nakshatra named after an act of attention. Vishnu presides, and the three footprints are Vamana's, the three strides that measured the whole universe. This is where knowledge arrives through listening rather than argument, and where the person who says least in the meeting turns out to have understood the most.

The Symbol and Its Story

Vishnu's dwarf incarnation Vamana asked the demon king Bali for three paces of land and then crossed earth, sky and heaven in three strides, which is why the three footprints mark this nakshatra. The other symbol is simply an ear, and the Vedas themselves are shruti, 'that which is heard', transmitted by listening for millennia before anyone wrote them down. Shravana is therefore the organ of tradition: the receiving instrument through which knowledge crosses generations. The Moon rules it, which makes the listening emotional rather than merely accurate, and Shravana hears the feeling under the sentence.

Personality and Nature

Shravana natives are attentive, receptive, well-read and unusually good at drawing people out, mostly by not interrupting. They have an ear in every sense, often gifted with languages or music, and they retain what they hear with a fidelity that surprises the speaker later. They are traditional and care greatly about reputation, their own and their family's, and they are sensitive to criticism in a way they rarely admit. There is a genuine devotional streak here, and Shravana is often the family's connection to whatever it still believes.

Career and Money

Teaching, scholarship, translation, languages, media and broadcasting, counselling and therapy, music, publishing, law, religious and traditional knowledge, and any advisory role suit Shravana. The Moon and Vishnu together make an excellent counsellor and a poor combatant, and this nakshatra should not be pushed into adversarial work. Money comes through knowledge and reputation rather than aggression, and it is sufficient rather than large, since Shravana would genuinely rather be respected than rich. Its career risk is talking about other people's work for so long that it forgets to do its own.

Love and Marriage

In love Shravana is devoted, attentive and gentle, and being properly listened to is a rarer gift than most people realise, so it is a very good partner. It is faithful and takes the relationship's public standing seriously, sometimes more than it should. The shadow is over-sensitivity to what is said about the marriage, and a tendency to absorb a partner's mood so completely that its own gets lost. It needs someone who asks Shravana what Shravana thinks, and then waits for the answer.

Shadow Side and Remedies

The shadow is the gossip's ear, the fixation on reputation, an over-sensitivity that turns a small criticism into a long injury, and a passivity that listens when it should speak. Health is the low score, since the Moon here absorbs the stress of everyone it listens to. Remedies include the Vishnu Sahasranama, Monday worship of Chandra, Om Namo Narayanaya recitation, offering white flowers, and honouring one's teachers directly. The medicine for Shravana is to speak once, in its own voice, about its own thing.
